Smallwood is a 42-year-old internationally established design firm that provides innovative professional services for corporate, commercial, hospitality, multifamily, industrial, government and educational projects. The vast majority of our commissions come through the longstanding relationships our leadership has built with clients in both the public and private sector. In our work, we measure our success by the success of our clients and their projects.  We are looking to expand our client base wherever possible to lead to new projects within all of our design disciplines - Architecture, Interior Design, Master Planning, Experiential Graphic Design and Landscape Architecture. 

Smallwood is seeking a Business Development Director with 10 – 15 years’ experience to join our Atlanta office. As Business Development Director, you will seek out opportunities to expand our reach and coordinate business development activities intended to lead to new-business opportunities in any and all of the firm’s project areas. The Business Development Director will work collaboratively with the firm’s leadership to identify new business opportunities, coordinate the necessary communications strategies, and implement targeted marketing activities related to these new opportunities. Candidates with a background in the design or construction field are preferred, and a demonstrated talent for identifying new business opportunities, networking, and marketing activities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Engage the firm leadership sufficient to understand their strategic goals and the brand messaging that will guide all new business development activities
  • Seek, identify, and communicate with new client prospects
  • Arrange meetings with prospective clients (travel required) to introduce appropriate firm management/staff
  • Attend industry events and coordinate with appropriate firm management/staff (travel required)
  • Work with leadership to strategize and implement new initiatives
  • Identify new contacts among key industry leaders and support building lasting and loyal relationships between them and our firm leaders.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
  • 10+ years’ experience in a Marketing or Business Development role, preferably in a design or construction firm.
  • Skill in managing multiple weekly business development activities, including managing deadlines and assignments of others contributing to these activities
  • Proficiency in InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator; Microsoft Word, and Excel desired. Experience with contact databases required.
  • Excellent graphic, communication, and organizational skills
  • Candidate should be self-disciplined and confident in a fast-paced working environment, with good interpersonal skills. A willingness to collaborate with and direct others; candidates should be detail-oriented, accurate and hands-on, a self-starter
