A Contemporary Translation of the Art Deco Aesthetic

Hearst Tower, located at 214 North Tryon, is a forty-seven story, 935,000 SF office building located in the Uptown Urban Development District. The interior design of the public spaces carries out the Art Deco theme of the building exterior. The building has lobby access on three levels: College Street, the North Tryon Plaza, and the Overstreet level. A network of interlocking lobby spaces joined by monumental staircases links these entrances. The palette of materials, bold massing and the diagonal lines of the building exterior are incorporated into the interior design through the shaping of the spaces, floor patterns, metal doors and accents and dramatic radiating ceiling designs.
